Are the gays of northern ohio the same as the gays in New York City, Chicago, LA or San Francisco? Yes when it comes down to the basics of sex. But NO when it has anything to do with entertainment. I was reminded of these differences the past few months. when some tertainers due here canceled out because of the lack of interest in our gay community. These performers, with a deserved and enthusiastic following in major gay cities, found that we as a whole couldn't care less if they appeared here or not. I'm referring to Ms. Shirley Bassey, Ginger Rogers and Diana Ross. Whereas these three women could pack a big theatre for weeks in Manhattan, Hollywood or Frisco they couldn't even manage to get enough advance reservations for a one or two night stand here at the Front Row, Music Hall or Public Auditorium. This is not to say that these 3 women ONLY have a gay following. But without the gays, in attendance in their other engagements they wouldn't have been as successful. All of this is a preface to the up coming appearance of one of Entertainment's brightest stars and a favorite in the big cities.
I'm referring to Ms. Chita Rivera. If readers are now exclaiming "who is she?" then her engagement at the State Theatre in Playhouse Square on March 15th is going to be a major disappointment. For Ms. Riveral is without a doubt SENSATIONAL! But don't take my word for it. Read what has been said. about her and her show in New York and Los Angeles. "It's an exciting, funky, trashy (with Chita, what else?) show in which this talented and versatile entertainer gives expression to several great songs (from her own starring roles in "Chicago" and "Sweet Charity") and wraps her sinewy, sensual limbs around some flashy dancers that director/choreographer Ron Field (he just finished creating the dances for the new Liza Minneli/Robert DeNero movie "New York, New York") has created for her." More quotes: "Adding to the visual interest, Chita's backed by three singer/dancers named Tony Stevens, Leland Schwantes and Spencer Henderson."
"Studio One's Backlot Room (in L.A.), her first engagement with her new nightclub act since leaving the "Chicago" show was one of those opening night electrifying events, with the invitational audience packed with people such as Liza Minneli, Shirley MacLaine, Larry Kent, and Charles Pierce (whp had just finished packing the room for two weeks)."
"Among the faces of her adoring fans spotted at the afterthe-show party at Allan Carr's palatial Beverly Hills Mansion
were George Maharis, Henry (Fonz) Winkler and Harry Reams (no, not together).
Readers in the "know" can recognize many of the above names as "fellow travelers". And anybody with just a little gay comprehension would have seen that Chita's audiences are comprised mainly of guys and gals. Are you asking WHY? Then you are not one of the million gays in the world who (1) Go for Broadway musicals (2) Go for Great Gutsy Glittering Talent (3) Buy and enjoy such

tales we guys are capable of. Yes I truly believe that generally we have the sensitivity creativity and style that makes for eat entertainment regardless if we are on or facing a stage. Without us there simply wouldn't be "show business" especially the kind that will be represented on the State Theatre stage for one week starting March 17th.
So I'm inviting every High Gear reader to doff their best and most fancy duds and strut on down to the State while Chital
T
Chita Rivera appearing at the State Theatre in Playhouse Square, Cleveland from March 17-27. (216) 523-1755 for reservations.
Broadway Original Cast Albums as "A Chorus Line", "Chicago", "Sweet Charity", "Mame", etc. (4) Love to see and hear such talents as Judy, Liza, Shirley, Diana, Angela, Bette (Midier), etc. (5) Read such publications as "After Dark", "Gentleman's Quarterly", "Advocate", "New York" and "The New Yorker".
But even if you are not ONE of the above you may still have seen Chita and group on the George Burns TV special just a few months ago. Or you might have caught her in the screen version of "Sweet Charity". And if you did you know why us gays (who are the group to appreciate talent) appreciate Chita. Now I realize that times are changing and that the young gays entering the gay world are not "show biz nuts" like us old farts are but i think that they should expose themselves to this world every now and then to get an idea of the tremendous
and her guys are there. The cost is only $2.00 weekdays $3.00 on Saturday and for that price THERE SIMPLY IS NO EXCUSE NOT TO GO. And I make this personal guarantee. If you're simply not delighted with the show I personally will refund the $2.00 you paid.
But act now. Call the State RIGHT NOW as you read this and reserve your seats. 523-1755 is the number. If you don't call NOW she may not appear as scheduled. So don't let happen to Chita what has happened to Shirley, Diana and Ginger because of your apathy. A star like Chita only shines briefly in this fair(?) city. Make her appearance here an event us gays can be proud of. The number to call: (216) 523-1755.
The request came from Dignity. "Aaron, could you please host one of our meetings and present a program that would be entertaining, in-
